Spoonbill Bird Sculpture
A few weeks ago, we had a rare Saturday of Sunshine and went out into nature. It’s been raining almost non stop for months, so every time the sun is shining or even if it’s just not raining, we go out.
That particular day I saw and photographed a lot of birds, but the highlight were some white spoonbills!
I knew they had started to come in winter, but I had never seen some up close. So I was so excited to see quite a lot where we went and of course took a ton of pictures.
I only wish I could have been faster to take pictures when they were flying. Such precious birds!
Now I have gotten into the habit of sketching the nature I encounter in my sketchbook. I don’t always manage time-wise, but of course, these spoonbills had to be immortalized!
I also drew and painted a common kestrel and a robin, both of which we saw during that lovely day in nature. (and those might also be turned into sculptures!?)
Sometimes, that’s really all it takes for me to want to explore further into sculpture.
I’m going to be honest, at the time, I was feeling a little burnt out and uncreative, so I just decided to transform these into sculptures and see where it would lead!
Below the progress of the sculptures in pictures :)
And finally the completed artwork on a vintage box I found at a flea market.
I always like to upcycle thrifted objects or trash and let nature take over.
I added mussels to the box as the spoonbills were dwelling on the rocks along the coast and usually you can find a lot of mussels there, so I thought it was quite fitting!
You can view more pictures on their dedicated page, but also check availability.
As I am writing this, they are travelling to O’Gallery in Denmark, where they will be seen from March 07 to April 26, alongside 2 other scculptures and a painting of mine, but also other artists.
I hope you enjoyed this little story behind “Lovers” and wish you a lovely day!
